SUMMARY:History To Chew On Series
DESCRIPTION:Black History at Ashland\nSpeaker: Eric Brooks \nIn this presentation we will examine the history of the estate from the perspective of African Americans enslaved and employed at the estate. Encompassing photos\, documents\, and other artifacts\, this presentation includes stories told on other tours at Ashland and new research that creates a much different view of these people that were until recently minimized or ignored. It will focus less on the work they did and more on the lives they created for themselves in the face of great racism\, inequality\, and even pain and suffering.

SUMMARY:History To Chew On Series
DESCRIPTION:Telling the Whole Story: Black History at Ashland\nSpeaker: Eric Brooks \n\nThis presentation will provide some perspective of the people of color\, enslaved and employed\, who lived and worked at Ashland from 1808-1948. This is a story of resistance and resilience. Black people at Ashland had rich and interesting lives and created agency for themselves even though they faced injustice and racism on a constant basis. Black people at Ashland were rarely able to record their stories or preserve evidence of their lives. We have to tease that information from a range of sources\, and it often comes in fragments that we must assemble into stories. \n \n

SUMMARY:History To Chew On Series - August 12
DESCRIPTION:Governor Shelby House and Family\nSpeaker: Wesley Francis\n\nThe Shelby family is closely tied to Kentucky’s history\, with Isaac Shelby\, a key figure in the American Revolutionary War\, earning the title “The Hero of Kings Mountain” for his leadership. This fame led to his election as Kentucky’s first governor in 1792. Shelby acquired extensive land through military service and inheritance\, establishing his estate\, Traveller’s Rest\, on the first preemption granted in Kentucky\, reportedly found while he hunted buffalo for Fort Boonesborough.

SUMMARY:History To Chew On Series - October 14
DESCRIPTION:The Life of Harland Hubbard\, Artist and Shanty Boater on Ohio and Kentucky Rivers\nSpeaker: Jessica Whitehead\n\n\nWriter\, artist\, and sustainability pioneer Harlan Hubbard (1900–1988) lived a quiet\, unassuming life\, and yet he is thoroughly embedded in Kentucky’s historical memory. While some may know of Hubbard’s shantyboat sojourn on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers with his wife\, Anna\, or of Payne Hollow\, their hand-built homestead\, few know the full story. After four decades of transformation\, HJenniferubbard emerged in middle age as the rightful heir to the Transcendentalist ethos\, ready to envision a unique existence of simplicity and wild beauty akin to that of the revered Henry David Thoreau. \n
